There are many different school traditions but one that seems to be everyone’s favorite is the powderpuff game. This game always takes place during homecoming week. Powderpuff is when the boys cheer and then the girls play football. At this year’s powderpuff game the seniors won against the juniors. When doing powderpuff it isn’t easy. There are dads that coach the girls on how to play football, dance team and cheer team girls that work together to make up sideline dances and a halftime routine for the boys, and most importantly the players have to learn how to do things they have never done before.
Dance team member Zoey Laga was one of the six coaches for the boys cheer and dance team. Zoey said that “I learned to have some patience with people. When you’re teaching someone/or a group of people who have never danced before, it’s going to take them a minute to get what they are learning compared to a pre-professional dancer, we can learn choreo in one try and still somewhat kill it.”
Teaching the boys how to dance and cheer was an experience. It was definitely fun trying to teach them moves that most dancers learn at a really young age but they still had fun and that’s what matters. The boys had to learn different ways to work as a team to make the dance look the way it did. The boys had to learn how to count and listen to their music and memorize a dance that was almost 4 minutes long which is a long time for a group of boys that have never danced before.
The girls who tried to play football also had an experience they will never forget. They had the opportunity to try and play all the different positions in football and learn different plays.
Addison Donnelly, one of the football players on the junior team, said that “learning football was definitely interesting; it differed a lot from my usual everyday activities. I think powderpuff was a great opportunity for students to branch out and try something new.”
With powderpuff it gives each grade an opportunity to get to know each other and build strong bonds with classmates on how to work with each other and communicate with each other. Over the 6 practice that the had they learned how to make and call out different plays which helped bring them closer together because they had to work together in order to complete different plays.
“ Powderpuff is a great tradition and brings friendly competition between the grades which bonds them further.” Addison Donnelly said.
Overall, powderpuff is one of many peoples favorite homecoming week traditions and it is important to our school because it makes many memories and brings the grades closer together forming bonds that will last a lifetime.
