This past Wednesday, April 22, Fraser Girls Varsity Tennis won their third MAC Blue match against Cousino 8-0. The temperature was in the high 40s, but the chilled wind dropped the air ten degrees. Several times during warm-up and towards the end of the meet, small flurries rained down on the teams. Similar to the previous Monday, the winds became more like background noise and had little effect on the players.

The past week alone, the girls played in all types of weather from warm and sunny to cold and snowy. During changeover, doubles players would huddle closer together against the harsher winds.

Cousino had a different strategy, which was that the girls would play only from the baseline. This was prominent in the doubles team, who played two back to Fraser’s one up one back. Fraser had to adapt and be active with ball placement on court with the wind blowing.

Outstanding performances by two singles: Amanda Vanjaarsveld, who won both sets 6-1 and three doubles Emily Solecki and Violet Rode, who won both sets 6-1.

In another four doubles, Fraser went into a third set. The remainders of the teams were done and sitting behind the fence wrapped up in blankets and cuddling like monkeys. While Fraser cheered at the good plays and serves of their teammates, Cousino cheered at their teammate’s victories and Fraser’s faults. Cheering because someone hit a ball out or into the net is not showing good sportsmanship. Despite the disrespect from Cousino, Fraser won.

Fraser now has their third MAC Blue division win. Thursday April 23, they have a MAC crossover away against St. Clair, MAC Red, who are significantly better, which means the girls have to be ready to play.

“The competition they normally play, they normally go to States and Division three; they normally play teams like Grosse Point North, South, Port Huron, who also regularly go to states,” said Varsity Coach Greg Dalida. “St. Clair will be pretty decent, pretty seasoned, so we just need to come out ready to play.”

Because the girls won 8-0, Friday after practice Coach Dalida is going to buy the team ice-cream from Baskin Robins.
