Many people remember the single “Call Me Maybe” that was on every radio station in American three years ago. Now, Carly Rae Jepsen is back with her sophomore album to be released this summer, titled “E·MO·TION”.

The lead single from the album, “I Really Like You” was released March 2nd with its music video coming out four days later on March 6. “I Really Like You” video follows the typical day of Tom Hanks, known for his role of Forrest Gump. Hanks lip sings Jepsen’s song to commit to memory, as he is going to sing along with Carly Rae Jepsen in her video. So the video for “I Really Like You” is a music video within a music video. Carly Rae Jepsen appears towards the end of the video with a surprise cameo of Justin Bieber, which isn’t so surprising when one knows they share a manager.

While the video itself is cute and charming, the song is what catches the listener. It is phenomenally catchy with its upbeat tempo and resonating the teenage girl feeling of having a crush and wondering if he likes her too.

The track has the feel ‘80s, as she probably took a leaf out of Taylor Swift’s success from its influence. Jepsen may have been influenced by Jack Antonoff, who wrote three tracks from “1989”.

While we see most artists take new directions in their music from album to album, Jepsen kept her mainstream pop sound from three years ago. With the help of Tom Hanks’s and Justin Bieber’s appearance, and if her cards are played right, Carly Rae Jepsen will return to the top charts to stay.

“E·MO·TION” has a set release date in Japan for June 24 with a US release date TBD.
