Novocaine is a new action movie directed by the duo of Dan Berk and Robert Olsen. This is their fifth time teaming up and with this entry in their filmography, they make a movie about a man who can’t feel pain that works at a bank who then meets a girl that he falls in love with. When the bank that he works at gets robbed and the girl he loves is the hostage who gets kidnapped, he decides to go after the robbers to save her.
To start off I would like to give Jack Quaid, of The Boys fame, his flowers for his performance as Nathan Caine. He does a great job in this role being someone who can’t feel pain, and it’s believable throughout the movie. I would also like to add saying that everyone else does a great job in their roles, especially Ray Nicholson and Amber Midthunder for both being really fun characters.
The relationship between Nathan Caine (Jack Quaid) and Shelly (Amber Midthunder) is written very well and for the little bit of it we get in this movie, it feels more believable than other movies that try to go for the same thing *cough* The Crow (2024) *Cough*. The acting also helps the believability. It also makes for some scenes that make you laugh and make your soul feel good.
The comedy in the movie is amazing. There are many times where I was laughing due to the comedy of this movie. Many times, when Nathan gets hurt and doesn’t feel it, you can’t help but laugh due to the obliviousness of the character and it leads into some really funny moments. Other than those moments, the relationship adds a lot of funny moments to this movie.
The action is very well done. While not on par with John Wick, the choreography and the effects are great. The kills are nothing special compared to the choreography. There is a fight in a kitchen that was amazing, if you want to look at the dialogue or the fighting or even the effects, there would be a hard argument on the action being bad. If this gets a sequel, I could see the action getting a lot better and up to the standards that John Wick set.
Overall, I really enjoyed Novocaine and have no real negatives towards this movie. I am going to give this movie a 4.5/5 and will recommend that you go watch this movie and support an original idea.
