The 4As Club has become an important part of the Fraser community, bringing students from diverse backgrounds together to volunteer, give back, and develop leadership skills. The club’s name, which stands for Arts, Athletics, Activities, and Academics, encapsulates its mission: to create a space for all types of students to come together and serve their local community.
The club’s purpose is simple but powerful — to foster a spirit of service while teaching students the importance of giving back.
“The purpose of the 4As Club is to help the community,” said Mrs. McClain, the club’s sponsor. “It’s a community outreach club, so we do all different volunteer trips throughout the year.” The club’s activities range from road cleanups to helping at local food banks like Forgotten Harvest and Gleaners.
“We try to also give students a sense of service, trying to teach them that it is something that’s important and part of becoming a well-rounded person,” McClain said.
Inclusivity is at the heart of the 4As Club, and its open-door policy reflects that. There are no prerequisites for membership, and anyone interested can join by simply reaching out to Mrs. McClain.
“It’s about inclusivity and service,” McClain explains. “We want to make sure the club is for everyone and that students get the chance to meet new people they wouldn’t normally be around.”
Lana Kauffman, a member of the club, shares her transformation since joining the club.
“Originally I wasn’t big on community service. I didn’t do a lot of it, but now that I’m in the club, I enjoy doing it,” Kauffman said. “It’s something I take pride in now.”
Through volunteering opportunities like packaging food for the homeless at Forgotten Harvest, Lana has developed greater empathy and leadership skills.
“Being part of the 4As has affected my leadership skills positively. I try to take initiative and be a leader,” Kauffman said.
For some members, the 4As Club is more than just a place to volunteer — it’s a space for personal growth and self-expression. Shianne Duzan, another member, recalls being shy before joining the club.
“I was shy, I still am, but since everyone is so nice and inclusive, I am more expressive,” she says. “The teamwork dynamics are amazing. Everyone works together, everyone talks together, and no one is left out,” Duzan said.
The supportive environment of the club has helped Shianne and other members feel more comfortable stepping into leadership roles and building relationships with others.
The 4As Club is also a great place for students to build new friendships.
“I’ve met some of my closest friends through 4As,” Kauffman reflects. The inclusivity and teamwork fostered by the club have created an environment where students can bond over shared experiences and develop lasting connections.
While the club’s main focus is on volunteering, members have also expressed a desire for more engagement. Mrs. McClain shares this goal, noting that one of her aims is to increase the club’s involvement in volunteer opportunities directly within the high school or the district.
The club is also collaborating with the Student Council to assist with Charity Week this year, further strengthening its ties with the wider school community.
For students considering joining, the 4As Club offers an opportunity to make a positive impact while gaining valuable skills and experiences.
“It’s a low-stress club,” McClain said. “We just want students to show up and be willing to help. They need to be responsible because we are representing Fraser High School, but other than that, it’s a fun and rewarding experience.”
Shianne has some advice for potential new members–
“Don’t be nervous to try new things, especially if you’re not an outgoing person like I was. You will definitely enjoy yourself,” Duzan said. The club offers an inclusive space for all, whether you’re an extrovert or an introvert, allowing every student to contribute to their community in their own way.
As the 4As Club continues to grow, its impact on Fraser High School and the local community is undeniable. By offering a place for service, connection, and personal growth, the club embodies the values of teamwork and kindness.
For those looking to get involved, the next volunteer event is a trip to Gleaners Food Bank on January 14th, where members will continue their mission of helping those in need. Whether you’re interested in making new friends, gaining leadership skills, or simply giving back, the 4As Club is an ideal place to start.
