This year, three amazing teachers from Fraser High School are retiring. Mrs. Hagerty, Mrs. Socha, and Mrs. VanEenenaam-Iwanicki (Van-I) have dedicated many years of their lives to teaching and have finally decided to start new chapters in their lives.
Mrs. Hagerty is the piano studies teacher here at Fraser High School. She began teaching here in 2008. She originally began teaching in 1995 at all Fraser elementary schools as a vocal music teacher and a long term sub position as a choir teacher at Richards Middle School. Mrs. Hagerty got her teaching degree from three different schools. She went to Western Michigan, Oakland University, and Marygrove College. She received a Bachelors in Music Therapy, Teacher Certification in Music Education, and a Masters Degree in the “Art of Teaching” and 15 additional masters credits. Mrs. Hagerty was also honored as Fraser High Schools ‘Teacher of the Year’ in 2018 and was honored to have been nominated as “LifeChanger of the Year” a National recognition in 2019.
One of Mrs. Hagerty’s biggest accomplishments throughout her years was the impact she made on designing the piano lab. She said, “I’m so proud of the fact that, along with my colleagues, we were able to design the Piano Lab, see it through its creation and establish a Piano Studies program at the High School.”
Mrs. Scopa is the sociology, psychology, and AP psychology teacher here at Fraser High School. She also runs the 4A’s club which
is a club that focuses on volunteer work and community service around the area. She began teaching here in 1992. She originally began teaching World History, Global Studies, and American History. Mrs. Scopas received a bachelor degree in business at Michigan State University and a Masters degree in teaching at Wayne State University.
After Mrs. Scopas retires, she plans on “watering flowers” which means that she wants to “do anything that brings her joy” she said.
Mrs. Van-I started teaching in 1999. Before she started teaching she was an athletic trainer in 1991 at Fraser High School. Mrs.
Van-I teaches all Health Science classes. She teaches Medical and Health Science Careers, Patient Care, Sports Medicine, Intro to Health Science, Medical Terminology, Health Science Capstone, and Health Science Independent Study. She also runs HOSA, which is a club that gives students who want to be future health professionals experience in their desired profession. Mrs. Van-I received a Bachelor of Science in Central Michigan and a Master of Education at Wayne State University.
The advice Mrs. Van-I has for people who want to go into teaching is “Go for it! It is hard but it is rewarding. Make connections with your students” she said. “Remember you are teaching students, not a subject.”
Throughout their many years of teaching they have made many different memories and had connections with students that made big impacts on their lives just like how they have made impacts on students lives.
