I had the amazing opportunity to be a part of the first ever PBS Newshour Winter SRL Academy that took place in Austin, Texas between December 16th to December 21st. This workshop was all expenses paid for opportunities that gives students, from all across the country, the chance to learn and grow as student reporters. Within my group, which contained Maggie Lebeau (Glenbard East High School, IL), Desha Madhavan (Dominion High School, VA), Aron Sanchez (Brentwood High School, NY), and myself along with the help of our mentors Victor Frenandez (Director, Youth Media Program) and Mercedes Ezeji (2019 Gwen Ifill Legacy Fellow). Together we produced a story on an educator from Austin, Texas named Susana Diaz-Lopez who helps keep Mexican Culture alive by teaching classic mariachi music to a new generation of students. The story was published to PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs on January 8th, 2024. You can check out the story by watching it below.
